Shropshire County Cross Country Success – 2017

Success for Wrekin College Triathlon Club at U11 Shropshire Cross Country Championships 2017

The club enjoyed a very successful morning at the championships held at Prestfelde School, Shrewsbury on Sunday 5th February 2017, winning medals at three of the four age groups.

Our team of 11 arrived early to walk the course, pin on their numbers and warm up on what was a great morning for cross country running.  The course which was new to most of the team was a good test – varied and challenging.

Rosie and Ava Kind set us off to an excellent start in the U10’s Girls Race.  Both battled hard to be in contention for a medal running consistently in the top 5 throughout the race.  In a dramatic sprint finish Ava nipped in the claim bronze and Rosie just behind in 5th.

We fielded a strong team of 6 in the U11’s Girls Race and hopes were high.  The girls did not disappoint and all ran brilliantly to ensure that we claimed 1st spot in the team event with 4 of our runners finishing in the top 10.  Isabelle Price led the race from start to finish and secured first place and was pushed all the way by Lydia Lane-Craddock who finished comfortably in second.   Pheobe Jones and Caitlyn Mander had excellent runs both finishing in the top 10.  The team was completed by Christie Morrow and Charlotte Perkins who both ran strongly, steadily working their way through the field throughout the race.

The U11 boys race saw Henry Williams and Alfie Cox take the start line in the Wrekin Tri colours.  This was a tough race with a strong field and Henry led from the front.  He was tracked all the way by his close rival from Shrewsbury Athletics Club who proved too strong in the closing stages of the run.  Henry finished an excellent 2nd to add to this 1st place in the Shropshire Young Athletics League Cross Country Series before Christmas.  Alfie Cox had an excellent race, working hard throughout and with a strong finish came in 13th.

Thomas Scott took to the cross country circuit for the first time in Wrekin Tri colours in the year 4 run.  He looked comfortable throughout and finished well up the field.

The team was well supported throughout by their parents and families.  In true Wrekin Tri club fashion it was fantastic to see everyone stay for all of the races and support all of our runners – a big thank you to all of you.
